Black Flag Designs turned a DIY challenge into a nation-wide signage success

Black Flag Designs

Nearly 25 years ago, Black Flag Designs Founder/Director Chris Hutton faced a challenge; he wanted his race car wrapped with eye-catching graphics but was deterred by the high cost associated with professional wrapping services at the time. So he took matters into his own hands and learned the intricate art of car wrapping himself, starting with his own vehicle before extending himself to work on friends’ cars, experimenting with various designs and materials.

Word about Chris’s skill and quality work spread and he was soon handling signage requests from a wide range of businesses and industries, in addition to the swathe of vehicle-wrap jobs he was already managing. That overwhelming demand prompted Chris to turn his passion into a fully-fledged business hence Black Flag Designs was founded, and has grown exponentially in the years since.

With quality, creativity and customer satisfaction at the core of everything they do, Black Flag Designs are proud of their humble origins, the journey that has led them to be a trusted name in the signage industry, and their partnership with Roland DG that has grown with them since the very beginning.

Black Flag Designs have always relied on Roland DG printers and cutters so when they were looking to upgrade to a new printer, the TrueVIS VG2-640 was an obvious choice. As soon as they saw the incredible vibrancy of the orange prints it produces, its usability and capacity to handle large projects seamlessly, they were sold.

Chris continues to be thrilled with their TrueVIS printer and ink saying “once we moved over to the new machine with the quicker drying time and more vibrant colours, we’ve just picked up more and more work. And to be able to push it out the door faster has been a God-send.”

"Once we moved over to the new machine with the quicker drying time and more vibrant colours, we’ve just picked up more and more work. And to be able to push it out the door faster has been a God-send.”

It’s not unusual for their TrueVIS machine to print around the clock and Black Flag Designs are pleased to say “it never lets them down.” It’s this reliability that makes their TrueVIS printer the ideal choice for vehicle wraps, fleet signage, back-lit signs and a myriad of other signage projects.

Black Flag Designs embrace variety and versatility in the projects they print, but fundamental to the service they deliver to their customers is consistency; consistency in the vibrant, punchy colour they print that extends to every commercial vehicle and truck in the national fleets they wrap, custom wraps on race cars, trucks and other vehicles, in addition to signage for events, businesses and more. Chris says “having a dedicated colour swatch helps us know we can nail the colour. So when a customer comes in and we say ‘this is what we’re going to print’, we know that’s what the machine is going to print.”
