Direct-to-Film transfers can be applied to cotton, polyester, and blends. DTF transfers to coloured polyester can present challenges because of dye migration, which is the transfer of the dye from the polyester fabric to the image after heat application. This can lead to discoloration of the image that's heat applied to the garment. For example, if dye migration occurs when transferring an image to a red polyester garment, it can result in the image having a red or pink tint.
Dye migration can be eliminated or reduced by changing the application settings for the transfer. Transfers to cotton and most blends can be applied at 166 degrees C for 15 - 20 seconds. Polyester garments should be pressed at 135 degrees C for 10 seconds.
Please note that testing should be done before production begins as dyes react differently at varying temperatures. The transfer of the dye may still occur with certain fabric brands or types.
Application Instructions:
- Set heat press temperature to 135 degrees C.
- Press fabric without transfer for five seconds to remove moisture and wrinkles.
- Apply transfer with firm pressure for ten seconds.
- Wait for film (Part # SF-164) to cool completely. SF-164 film is a cold peel product.
- Peel the transfer film.
- Place a non-stick cover sheet over the transfer, then press again for five seconds to improve transfer feel and washability.
